February 4 - Day of the Armed Struggle in Angola

Posted on February 4, 2018

Today commemorates the first skirmish in the War of Independence in Angola. On this date in 1961 forces calling themselves the People's Movement for the Liberation of Angola attacked a prison and successfully freed independence leaders who had been held there.

This uprising was the beginning of a 15-year (15! Years!!! Yikes!!!!!) struggle for independence from Portugal.

The bad news: Angola is not high on the democracy scale, or the human rights scale.

The good news: it has been pretty stable since 2002.

The bad news: the standard of living is pretty low.

The good news: the economy is one of the fastest growing in the world, and the nation has some pretty good mineral resources.

The bad news: People are probably not going to be able to farm this land:

The good news: The Valley of the Moon is a tourist attraction - and very beautiful!
