March 6 - Oreo Cookie Day

Posted on March 6, 2018

Happy birthday to Oreo Cookies!

These guys are high in calories, sugar, and fat - but they are tasty to many people (including, sadly, me!). Since they were introduced to the public on this date in 1912, about five hundred BILLION have been sold in the cookies' first 100 years.

That's 500,000,000,000 Oreos!

But about 95 million cookies are sold each and every day. And there have been six years since that statistic was computed...So...a lot more than 500,000,000,000 at this point!! (You can compute the approximate number, if you want. I did - and it's STAGGERING!)

Here are a few more fun facts about Oreos:

About half of all people who eat them pry them apart first.

If you stacked all of the Oreo cookies sold in a single day, you would be able to make a stack as high as Mount Everest - 136 times!!!

It takes almost an hour - exactly 59 minutes - to make an Oreo, from mixing to baking to packing.

Oreo is considered the best-selling cookie brand in the world. It's available in more than 100 countries.

Take a peek at these varieties of Oreo cookies:

There are even more varieties here and here - candy corn Oreos? berry burst ice cream Oreos? Wow! Who knew?

And now check out all the ways that people use Oreos creatively:
